Engineered 4-pass sequence eliminated central bursting defects and improved mechanical properties in high-strength oval steel wire.
A producer of high-strength oval steel wire for springs was experiencing 'central bursting' (chevron cracks). They were attempting to achieve the final shape in too few passes, overstressing the material core.
We designed a rational 4-pass breakdown sequence. By gradually transitioning the wire from round to oval using calculated reduction ratios, we optimized the grain flow and relieved internal stresses.

Central bursting defects were eliminated. The mechanical properties of the wire became uniform across the cross-section, improving the fatigue life of the final springs.
